Your Oregon Stories for August 2019

What an amazing Oregon summer, Friend.

The dog days have been few, and the beach days have been many. With sunsets like this (over a stretch of Pacific City between Cape Kiwanda and Bob Straub State Park), it's easy to remember why we ♥ Oregon!

That's also why, here at 1000 Friends, we've been busy putting your donations to work in myriad ways. Here are some of the things your support has accomplished in the last month:

Deputy Director Mary Kyle McCurdy spent several days in Condon for the recent LCDC meeting. Our Farmer Advisory Committee is geared up for Farwest at the Portland Convention Center this week. Our Cooperating Attorney Program is expanding. The campaign for this fall's Metro parks and nature bond renewal has kicked off. We're organizing the Getting There Together Coalition in advance of significant housing and transportation votes. Our Land Use Leadership Initiative is more than halfway to graduation. Our summer interns are wrapping up their projects. Last but not least, we're in the midst of planning both our McCall Gala (this September in Portland; more info below) and our Affiliates Conference (this November in Corvallis).

If there's anyone who deserves a day at the beach, though, it's you, our supporters, who make all of this possible. Thank you, and happy last days of summer!

For Oregon,

Executive Director

Forests and farmland in Douglas County

LUBA Victory in Douglas County

It took a whole year, but we did it! This month, the Land Use Board of Appeals agreed: 22,500 acres of Douglas County forest and farmland cannot simply be redesignated for residential development.

Scott and Andrew, our new Rural Land Use Legal Team

Your Rural Land Use Legal Team

Our roster of staff attorneys has grown. Welcome, Andrew Mulkey and Scott Hilgenberg! When major land use issues arise outside of Oregon's urban growth boundaries, Andrew and Scott will be there to help.

Oregon Leads on Housing

This month, we were in Salem to see Governor Brown sign landmark housing legislation HB 2001 into law. Among other things, the law re-legalizes classic Oregon home types like this Portland fourplex.
